Support for the purchase of a powder coating plant which will strengthen the firm’s bid for further HS2 contracts
Nature of the deal: Grant allocation facilitated through Enterprise Telford
Location: Horton Wood West, Telford
Support provided: Assisting with the delivery of grant funding up to a value of £50,000+ to support business growth, contributing towards a total project value of £110,000
Managing Director at Baker Bellfield, Jamie Baker, said: “As the shortlisted train builders gear up their bid campaigns for HS2, it is imperative we remain at the forefront of the UK rail interiors market. We have already made a significant, self-financed investment into our new Metalwork & Rail Interior Component Assembly factory, but with the assistance of grant funding, this will enable us to continue with our growth plans, ensuring we have the capacity and additional skilled labour for the volume of work we expect to come from HS2.”
Baker Bellfield is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of commercial interiors for sectors as diverse as office and education to rail and healthcare. The firm places a strong focus on control of product, overseeing projects from design stage through to final installation.
Operating 75,000 square feet of manufacturing space with an extensive range of capabilities, including metalwork, joinery and design engineering, the firm is at the forefront of commercial furniture manufacturing in the UK.
Having grown out of its former premises at a time of accelerated success for the firm in the airport sector, Baker Bellfield began its search for suitable land to accommodate a new metalwork factory which will help the company retain its competitive edge. With the support of Enterprise Telford it was able to relocate to new premises at Hortonwood West, a move set to strengthen the firm’s bid for further government contracts as part of HS2.
With its reputation as an industrial powerhouse and distribution hub for the Midlands region, Telford was an obvious choice for a business which is looking to expand its capabilities and tap into opportunities borne out of continued demand for infrastructure investment across the UK.
The Housing and Communities land at unit six of the Hortonwood West site was purchased in 2017, with the new Telford-based facility set to open in March 2018.
Enterprise Telford is also assisting Baker Bellfield with an application to the Business Growth Fund (BGF), worth a value of more than £50,000, which is currently underway to support the firm’s growth plans. If approved, the funding will contribute to a total project value of £110,000.
Why does this matter?
The opening of Baker Bellfield’s new home at Hortonwood West this year is particularly significant, as the firm celebrates its 25th anniversary doing business in Telford. It also coincides with Telford 50 celebrations, marking half a century since Telford’s designation as a new town in 1968.
Baker Bellfield stands out as a Telford success story as a business that has leveraged the industrial capability of the region to expand on all fronts, continuously investing in its people and products to develop into one of the UK’s biggest providers of commercial interior solutions.
The firm’s new facility in Telford will be instrumental to boosting the firm’s capacity in a bid to secure further HS2 contracts from government: increasing its market share and turnover, further expanding its product range and creating jobs that will make a significant contribution to the local economy.
The HS2 Curzon Street interchange will position the Midlands at the heart of the UK’s high speed rail network. This represents a unique opportunity for local businesses, small and large, to secure highly-sought after contracts to meet the demand for increased infrastructure capabilities, along with the long-term economic prosperity the project will bring to the region as a result of improved transport connectivity.
As Enterprise Telford project lead, Liz Wakeham-Jones, explains: “Baker Bellfield is a longstanding member of the business community in Telford and we’re thrilled to have been able to support them in their search for new premises in the area – especially in this milestone year for both the business and the town.
“It’s encouraging to see local business capitalising on the growth opportunities brought about as a result of the HS2 build and the government’s wider commitment to regional development in its strive to rebalance the UK economy.”
